The Toronto Cartoonists Workshop is a learning environment where aspiring cartoonists can study with working professionals in the North American comic book, webcomics, animation and illustration fields.

Show Me A Story: Fundamentals of Storyboarding
Instructor: Sam Agro

An intensive course covering the components of storyboarding for live-action film. Curriculum includes shot types, film language, continuity, mood, and working effectively with the director. Through lectures, film clips and example boards, students will learn the basics of telling a story visually. Students will also create their own sample storyboards to put the principles they have learned into action.

Working as a storyboard artist since 1983, Sam Agro has produced animation boards for shows like Ewoks and Droids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Ripping Friends. Live action projects he has been involved with include the Academy Award winning Fly Away Home, Murder at 1600, and several installments of the SAW horror franchise!

Start Date: February 6th, 2010 to March 27th 2010

Time: Saturday 1pm.-4pm.

Location: Bloor St. United Church, 300 Bloor Street West- Room 31.

Length: 8 weeks of 3 hour classes

Comic Book Inking: 4 Perspectives
Instructors: J. Bone, Ramon Perez, Ty Templeton & TBA.

Tracers need not apply. Comic book inking is a serious art form that employs a broad variety of approaches both philosophically and practically. Learn the essentials of the discipline with some of today’s top talents. This course will include lecture and demonstration components with four different artists, each with a very individual approach to their work.

Instructors will include J. Bone (Brave & the Bold, DC Super Friends, The Spirit & Jet Vector), Ramon Perez (Star Wars: Clone Wars; JSA: Classified, Resistance, Kukuburi & Butternutsquash) and Ty Templeton.

Start Date: February 2nd, 2010 to March 23rd, 2010

Time: Tuesday 6:30pm.-9:30pm.

Location: Bloor St. United Church, 300 Bloor Street West- Room 31.

Length: 8 weeks of 3 hour classes

Cost: $310.

Writing for Comics: Finding Inspiration on a Schedule
Instructor: Ty Templeton

Learn story construction, character development, dialogue, plotting, pitching and editing a script for the comics industry. Students will explore the different formats and techniques of comic script writing (including Marvel style and full script) while creating their own characters and stories.

Ty Templeton is a three time Eisner-Award winner whose credits include Batman, The Simpsons, Spider-man, Mad Magazine, Superman, Harvey Pekar, Star Trek, The Avengers, Howard the Duck, She-Hulk, Justice League, Hoverboy, the original graphic novel Bigg Time and Dexter: Early Cuts for Showtime.

Start Date: February 1st, 2010 to March 29th 2010 (no class February 15th)

Time: Monday 6:30pm.-9:30pm.

Location: O.I.S.E. Building (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) 252 Bloor St. West, Rm. 4418

Length: 8 weeks of 3 hour classes

Cost: $310.
